Liston Newton's Accountants analysed our financial and business situation and helped us implement strategies to improve our position. Their strategies turned our business from making a loss, to recording a 6-month net profit of 36 per cent. And we are now on track to show a 240 per cent increase in turnover over the next financial year.

Liston Newton helped us move our accounting over to Xero. Their Accountant managed the set up and training so we felt comfortable with the software. We now have all our processes streamlined which gives us improved visibility of our business performance. This has allowed us to open 2 more stores without a significant increase in administration effort.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start planning my estate?

Thorough planning of your estate is much more involved than simply drafting a Will. It’s important to understand the way your different assets, property, and other belongings are distributed.

As such, we recommend starting to think about your estate planning as soon as you’re earning a regular salary. This ensures you have enough time to carefully and thoughtfully plan for the future.

The key criteria that you need to meet are:

  • You are aged 18 years or older; and
  • You’re considered mentally competent.
What are the key factors to estate planning?

There are a number of key factors that go into planning your estate. These are:

  • Drafting your Will, and ensuring it remains up to date.
  • Ensuring your superannuation is taken care of by completing a Binding Death Benefit Nomination.
  • Setting up life insurance, outside of what’s included in your super account.
  • Managing the tax implications of your estate. This can include incorporating the use of a testamentary trust into your estate planning.
  • Appointing Power of Attorney into your estate.
What is estate planning?

Estate planning is the process of arranging for the management and distribution of your assets when you pass away, or become mentally incapacitated. Planning your estate requires a holistic look at your financial situation, and ensuring every aspect of your assets, property, and any finances are taken into account.

Thorough estate planning ensures that you’re able to carefully plan out who will receive particular assets or financial sums, and how and when this will be transferred to them.

Essentially, estate planning ensures you’re able to put a plan in place so your finances are managed even when you’re not around, and provide for your family in this eventuality.

How does an estate plan help?

Creating a thorough estate plan can help you manage your finances and assets by:

  • Formalising in writing how you wish for your finances and assets to be managed, even when you’re no longer around;
  • Providing clear guidelines to minimise disagreements and reduce future contests of your Will; and
  • Creating a framework to minimise the tax your beneficiaries pay on any finances or assets they receive from your estate.
